5 Most Common Carpet Stains and How to Remove Them

As a homeowner, you know that carpet stains are inevitable, especially if you have kids and pets. While some are much more severe than others, it’s nearly impossible to avoid spilling on the carpet completely. When you get a stain on your carpet, it’s important that you understand how to remove it, as some techniques work on other stains, but actually make certain types of stains worse. #1: Coffee Stains

You’re getting ready for work in the morning and you’ve just poured yourself a nice, delicious cup of hot, steaming coffee. As you make your way out of the kitchen, you trip on a toy and the coffee spills everywhere. Now what?

Coffee stains can leave your carpet looking filthy if they’re not cleaned properly. They leave a noticeable yellowish-brown tone, and can be difficult to clean if you don’t act quickly.

We recommend starting by blotting the surface with a dry towel. Avoid any type of scrubbing motion, as this will spread the stain and do further damage. After you’ve blotted it, try a carpet cleaning solution or a natural mix, such as vinegar, water, and gentle, non-bleach detergent.

#2: Kool-Aid Stains

If you have young children, you’ve likely had to deal with spilled Kool-Aid, as this is one of the most common stains we run into as professional carpet cleaners. If Kool-Aid gets spilled on your carpet, again, be sure to avoid any scrubbing or rubbing motions. In order to remove it, put some commercial cleaner over the stain. We recommend testing it on a smaller area first to be sure it won’t discolor your carpet or cause any damage.

After you’ve poured the solution over the stain, let it sit as per the instructions and try to dab the stain out.

Pet Stains

While we love our furry friends, they can sometimes cause issues when it comes to staining our carpets. If your pets leave waste on your carpet, start by cleaning up the mess itself. Clean up any droppings or blot any wetness. After you’ve done so, spray some pet-specific carpet cleaner over the area and let it sit. Do not ever scrub the stain, as it can make smells worse and can make the stain larger.

Ink Stains

Accidents happen, and there’s a chance that at some point, ink may make its way to your carpet. If it does, we recommend using some rubbing alcohol and dabbing it gently onto the ink stain. If rubbing alcohol doesn’t work, we suggest trying hairspray or nail polish remover. However, if you go this route, be aware that these products can stain carpets as well, so use them sparingly and only on the area needed.

Blood Stains

Accidental injuries, nosebleeds, cuts, and other issues can lead to drops of blood landing on your carpet. When you’re dealing with a bloodstain, the sooner you deal with it, the better. We recommend starting with cold water and dish detergent. Never use hot water, as the blood coagulates with heat, but cold water will prevent the blood from further permeating into the fibers in your carpet.

Chewing Gum

Got a piece of chewing gum stuck in your carpet? Not only is it gross, but it can also be difficult to remove. We recommend putting some ice in a plastic bag and cover the gum to freeze it. After the gum is frozen, try using a blunt object, such as a knife or other kitchen tool to break away at it. After you’ve removed most of the gum, vacuum the stain and blot it with a towel.
